\r\nMy advice is to always follow the true masters- the old guys that wrote in the turn of the century and through the early 60s. Language and its use was an art form then. What they had to do in writing then is what Radio, TV and the internet do today. They had to convey a clearly understood message, draw a picture and get the reader to take action, using only words. Written words carried a great deal more weight during that time period. Although, you could actually go back centuries and still find value in what was written then too.

\r\nAdmin uploaded an older book on the subject yesterday or early this morning (I think) that is one of my favorites. Most of the new guys doing copywriting have their roots deeply entrenched in what are actually old, reliable and very well-proven concepts and methods.
\r\n
\r\nAlthough, I wasn\'t really trying to write copy; it was intended to be about 50% informative and just general comments and 50% was based on how a lot of marketers are doing what they do today, which I really have problems with and you should also. If anything, it was really just general advice about how I handle all of the GBs of new material we see every day and how others may want to do the same thing and also allocate and manage their time now. None of us can read or take the time to listen to all of the videos, guides and audios we are being bombarded with now.
\r\n
\r\nIt also was an opinion about the kind of copy being written and the tactics used by marketers and their sales copy though. The immediate advice I would give you is to avoid cursing. Whether anyone says it or not here, it is offensive. It\'s not a good way to punctuate a thought or feeling and unnecessary.
\r\n
\r\nIf you want some books I reference often, both new and old, let me know and I will put together a list for you. Anyone can do it with lots of practice and a genuine willingness to learn. After over 30 years of writing, it sort of comes naturally when I write now. My post wound up not being directed at you and intended mainly as observations and writing about those. I am glad you saw that after you reread it.

\r\nThere are many that think what I do is easy, painless work. If I had to give you a short answer to that, it would be this:

\r\nWe all are gifted in some manner of communication. For some, it is their ability to speak well, for others it may be communicating in pictures or drawings. Others have a unique ability to speak volumes with body language.
\r\n
\r\nI don\'t find writing easy work, but the actual process does come easily to me... most of the time. I guess if everyone could do what I do, I wouldn\'t have as marketable a skill as this.
\r\n
\r\nWithout getting too "Zen" about it, writing anything is a quickly vanishing skill everywhere. We are a shorthand, get it done yesterday, texting-based world and the thing that people fail to realize is the more we stop using our ability to communicate effectively in writing, the poorer that skill will get and the smaller the supply of qualified writers becomes.
\r\n
\r\nI have a friend that has a teenage daughter and even going to the movies with her is very telling. We will usually make it a group affair with several of her friends. Here\'s the problem: they don\'t say a word to each other during the entire movie. However, they burn up their cellular phones texting each other back in forth the entire time. (It drives me nuts!) They choose to do this instead of talking with each other and that is truly sad and reflects poorly on the state of our ability to interact well with other people.
\r\n
\r\nThey would rather exchange information using dialogue that is as senseless to me as is the Chinese language. I don\'t understand it (texting) and don\'t want to learn it. But there is the key to the opportunity for the skilled writer that understands the power of potent language skills and clear dialogue with other people.
\r\n
\r\nA part of me loves the unlimited opportunity for people that can simply write effectively. Another part views this as further degradation of the skills all of us take for granted in society as a whole. Thinking about the latter is alarming and discouraging.
\r\n
\r\nBy the way, don\'t get too hung up on copy writing. Do you know what writers are getting for being able to write short stories, children\'s books, essays and even poems? Buyers are everywhere and they are really begging for GOOD content. People think that I am kidding about that statement; I\'m not.
\r\n
\r\nGiven a choice, smart business people don\'t want the $$3-$5 per article level of quality, and they are quick to tell you that fact. I\'ve been told that many times by many clients. The reasons are simple. The writing reflects on the quality of every aspect of that merchant\'s business. If you are putting garbage on your site and visitors read that, they are going to click away and you can take that to the bank. They don\'t want a fast food, mass-produced business image. It speaks volumes about their livelihood and what they rely on to make a living. That\'s why I laugh at the cheapo writers. They don\'t affect my business at all. It\'s the difference between eating a steak or a fast food hamburger to the clients. For the most part, they don\'t want the burger.
\r\n
\r\nWrite a few essays a month and you won\'t need to worry about where your income is coming from. Entrance essays, especially for college applicants can bring four figures EACH, depending on the difficulty that person will have getting into the college or university of their choosing. How about business plans or grant writing? Those are easily four figures a pop.
\r\n
\r\nWhite papers, technical writing, ANY kind of written text that requires thought, research, effort and concentration is bringing big paydays to people that can write well. So there is nothing but opportunity out there for the taking. If you get good enough, people will actually pay you extra to work exclusively for them and pay you a premium for it. You become an asset to them, and a valuable one at that because you are a difference maker. You slant the playing field in their favor and they love you for being able to do that.
\r\n
\r\nAgain, this just comes easily to me. Not everyone is cut from the same cloth though. However, even people that speak well can also write and never touch a keyboard. I am sure you know or have heard of Dragon Naturally Speaking software. For the new writer that is better at speaking than typing their thoughts, that software can make you look awfully good. You still need to know what you\'re doing, but you may find that it works best for you. There are always ways to get the task done.
\r\n
\r\nOthers never type a word... but they sure can delegate the tasks and put groups of people together that can get the job done. All they do is broker the work and smile all the way to the bank with work that was done solely off of the backs of others. They can\'t write to save their lives, but it doesn\'t matter because they can get the jobs done and meet the deadlines.
\r\n
\r\nThe bottom line is that you can work as little or as much as you want with this skill. You have no cap on your possible earnings. Copy writing is nothing more than writing to a predefined objective and conclusion with conviction, which is usually to convince someone to buy. It is doubtful that reading books will get you over the hump, but if you can speak well, again, that\'s another option.
\r\n
\r\nIt actually is a bit like a drug when you get that first four-figure check (or larger) for a job that comes easily to you. If you\'re motivated enough, that is often all you need to see just once to make a believer out of you. When you are good, you can ask for and get any price you want. The stories you hear about people getting percentages of the profits made as a result of their work are very true. I use that pricing model a lot these days and am moving to that being my choice of arrangement.
\r\n
\r\nYou are right though... writing isn\'t for everyone. It takes serious discipline and creativity that many people can\'t ever get the hang of to do well enough. When you think about it, you rarely see the words "discipline" and "creativity" used in the same document, let alone the same sentence, but it applies to this more than anything I can come up with.
\r\n
\r\nSo everything boils down to how much you want to do it. If you find it very exhausting now, a serious project will really hammer you. If you have no interest in the product, it can be a real grind. It\'s serious work and it\'s not for everybody. I can\'t make the choice for you and many people try this and fail badly. It sounds great and many people think it\'s what they want to do until they start dealing with deadlines and writing creative and/or compelling copy every day. Staring at a blank sheet of paper with a deadline to meet can be a daunting task for even the most skilled writer some days... and that includes me.
\r\n
\r\nIt sounds and looks easy until you get behind a keyboard and realize that your income is dependent on your skill and ability to handle multiple tasks creatively, expeditiously, and simultaneously, while exceeding the expectations of your clients. Writing just good enough to get the job done isn\'t good enough, not if you want to do it as a business. You\'ve got to be able to consistently blow your clients away and produce quality work at a level that they didn\'t think was possible.
\r\n
\r\nI keep saying it, but it is serious work and there is little that is easy about it. I encourage anyone that really wants to try it to start small and see how they feel doing it. Sometimes it\'s a good fit; other times you just want it over and done. If you\'re prone to the latter vein of thought or feeling, it\'s probably not for you.
\r\n
\r\nHowever, like anything else, that doesn\'t get tattooed anywhere, so you just need to find the right fit for you and you\'ll do fine. However, don\'t leave any doubt. I encourage anyone that wants to give it a try to do so. You will always wonder what might have been otherwise. At least scratch the itch and see if you can get it done consistently and while exceeding the benchmarks for quality that are vital to success as a business.\r\n

Cookie, is this a previously written post or have you taught yourself to think in such an organized manner. Its no the language; its the series of points you make. They seem to be prepared beforehand and afterwards elaborated and written for the post. Also I own and regularly use Dragon Naturally Speaking 10. Its good but I can\'t do that well when speaking. Writing is a better option for me. But, even when writing, I\'m only comfortable with a paper and pencil. I hate keyboards because they kinda interfere with my ideas. One more thing, in this part of the country, people got really poor language skills. Texting with shorthand has thrown grammar and spellings in oblivion. This again shows the importance of traditional language schools and rhetoric.\r\n\r\n
